Winter Lawn Tips

Now the cold weather is upon us, we rarely venture outside, the yard can sometimes become an afterthought. To keep your lawn looking healthy this winter, lawn mowing should continue on a regular basis, even as growth rates slow, weeds can quickly take over if not maintained properly.

Recommended cutting height

It’s a good idea to raise the cutting height during the colder months. Regardless of your lawn type you don’t want to be cutting any lower than 2.5cm. This will help the lawn absorb more sunlight. At the other end of the scale you don’t want your lawn to exceed a height of 5cm, as it will become thick and stalky.

Increase sunlight absorption

Try and keep fallen leaves and grass clippings off the lawn and if any trees or shrubs overhang or cast shadows consider trimming back to allow as much sunlight to reach the lawn as possible.

Frequency

We recommend your lawn to be cut every 3 weeks (on a day with no rain). Cutting saturated grass not only clogs up the lawn mower but resists a clean, straight cut.

Check the pH level

It’s also a good time to check the acidy level of your soil. Too much fertiliser can lead to an acidic lawn. You want to aim for a pH level of about 6 – 7. Adding one handful per square meter of Dolomite Lime prior to fertilising will get the pH level back in balance.

Fertilising

Just because your lawn growth may be slowing, this doesn’t mean your lawn no longer requires a good feed. Fertilising can still be done in winter but don’t expect spectacular results; it will help strengthen the lawn and keep diseases at bay. Remember, always use certified organic fertilisers as they yield better long term results and are better for the environment.
